Is Solar EV charging at home a smarter EV charging solution?

The growth of electric vehicles (EVs) will put pressure on the electricity grid and make it necessary for EV owners to consider smarter EV charging solutions such as Solar EV charging.

According to the EV SmartCharge Queensland Insights Report, EVs have the potential to double the electricity demand of residential homes based on recharging for an average daily commute.

Convenience charging at home during peak periods in the evenings could negatively impact the network, and there are higher costs associated with this practice for EV owners.

Solar EV Charging at Home

Solar EV charging at home can help you save money on electricity costs, increase your property value with a solar system and EV charger installed, and reduce your carbon footprint.

Factors to consider whether Solar EV charging at home or workplace EV charging is right for you include:

  1. Whether your EV is at home during the day to utilise solar power
  2. The type of EV charger – charger speeds vary from 2kW to 22kW
  3. The size of the solar system – typically, home solar systems range from 5kW to 15kW
  4. The vehicle battery size – a large battery EV versus a small battery EV
  5. The vehicle battery level – how much you need to charge.  How far and often you travel.

A standard home solar system is unlikely to power your EV completely. Using a typical solar system, it will take a long sunny day to charge an average EV from 20% to 80%.

Workplace Daytime EV Managed Charging Network is a Smarter Charging solution.

Some EV owners may have the flexibility to park at home and charge during times when their solar PV is generating excess energy, however, the majority do not.

People who live in apartments and only have street parking, or those who rent and cannot install at-home charging stations, will be reliant on public access EV charging.

During an average day, power sent to the grid from solar and wind generation is above the level consumers and businesses require – so this energy is wasted.

Charging your EV during the day at your workplace, shopping centres, and other public places allows you to take advantage of excess solar and wind energy on the network during the day.
